Daisy Devine would not be denied a return to the winner's circle Nov. 10, taking the $100,000 Cardinal Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Churchill Downs after a ding-dong battle with Julie's Love.
Making her second start off a layup and second last time out in the Oct. 6 First Lady Stakes (gr. IT) at Keeneland, Daisy Devine led all the way in the 1 1/8-mile turf event against eight other fillies and mares and finished the distance in 1:47.29. It was her first victory for trainer Andrew McKeever since an April 14 score in the Jenny Wiley (gr. IT) at Keeneland, after which she went to the shelf for five months.
The 4-year-old daughter of Kafwain sailed through opening fractions of :23.63 and :47.32, completely relaxed under looping reins and jockey Calvin Borel. Bizzy Caroline, favored at 9-5, contended along the inside and was second at the half-mile pole, but lacked response when called upon.
As the field neared the turn for home, Julie's Love advanced from fourth to contest the leader, who had opened a six-length advantage at the half and was still a length in front after three-quarters in 1:11.82. But Daisy Devine proved unyielding after a prolonged stretch drive through a mile in 1:35.42, and held on by a head.
It was 3 1/4 lengths back to Last Full Measure. Fugitive Angel, Bizzy Caroline, Revelstroke, Indian Pond, Affair Dabbler, and La Cloche completed the order of finish.
Daisy Devine, off at 2-1, returned $6.20, $3.60, and $3.40 while Julie's Love brought $6.60 and $4.60 and Last Full Measure paid $6.60.

Third Chance Dominates in Addison Cammack
ARLINGTON PARK, IL. (September 22, 2012)-No one had a chance against Third Chance by Kafwain on Saturday at Arlington Park in the $66,400 Addison Cammack Stakes.
Third Chance, the 1-2 favorite, set solid pace while making a clear lead in the Cammack, but she did so while racing under no pressure at all. And while riders on her pursuers turning for home began vigorously encouraging their mounts, Third Chance was running completely on her own, jockey Cisco Torres a statue on her back. She drew away to win the overnight stakes race easily, beating Sir Applesolutely by 6 3/4 lengths in a performance befitting a 1-2 favorite.
A 4-year-old filly facing males, Third Chance won for the 10th time in 19 career starts, and she has been victorious in 7 of 9 Arlington races. She stopped the timer in 1:10.23 for six furlongs and paid just $3 to win. Hoodwinked finished third, while Roarin Missile, who might have been the race's second choice, was scratched.
Owned by Ron Magers, Bob Marcocchio and others, and trained by Jim DiVito, Third Chance is a daughter of Kafwain bred in Illinois by Magers. She is the leading female sprinter (if not sprinter, period) in the Illinois-bred ranks, and will be heavily favored for a repeat victory in the Powerless Handicap next month at Hawthorne if her connections opt to keep Third Chance in statebred-restricted competition. And given the way she rolls the division, and the six-figure purse at Hawthorne, why wouldn't they? from DRF.com

By Jason Shandler BloodHorse.com
James Miller’s Daisy Devine, allowed to get away with an easy lead under James Graham, went wire-to-wire in the $300,000 Jenny Wiley (gr. IT) April 14 at Keeneland.
Photo: Anne M. Eberhardt
Trained by Andrew McKeever, the 4-year-old daughter of Kafwain won for the fourth straight time and bagged her first grade I victory at odds of 7-1.
Graham recorded his first grade I win at Keeneland only a week ago when he guided Karlovy Vary to a similar front-running type score in the Central Bank Ashland (gr. I), and was able to give McKeever his first taste of grade I glory with Daisy Devine. The bay filly was bred in Kentucky by J. Reiley McDonald and is out of the Devil’s Bag mare Devil’s Dispute. She was bought for just $5,500 out of the Keeneland September 2009 yearling sale.
Daisy Devine began her winning streak last fall over the same Keeneland turf course when she scored the Pin Oak Valley View (gr. IIIT), and continued her solid form at Fair Grounds when she won a pair of stakes down there, including the Mardi Gras Handicap in February.
With little speed in the race, Graham sent Daisy Devine right to the front and was able to carve out easy fractions in the 1 1/16-mile test. Receiving only mild pressure from Bay to Bay, she posted splits of :25.12, :50.78, and 1:15.35. Bay to Bay and Garrett Gomez chased her all the way around the course, while Heavenly Landing and Tapitsfly were in the next group, and favorites Zagora (7-2) and Aruna (2-1) were at the back.
Daisy Devine cut the corner nicely, held a 1 1/2-length lead at the eighth-pole, and never allowed Bay to Bay to get to her in her one–length triumph. Tapitsfly finished third, followed by Heavenly Landing, Zagora, and Aruna.
The final time on the firm turf was 1:43.21.
The winner improved her record to 7-1-1 from 12 starts and upped her earnings to $758,349. It was her third graded stakes win, the other coming in the Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. IIT) last year.

Kafwain Daughter Daisy Devine back to work
By Marcus Hersh DRF.com
Daisy Devine (Kafwain-Devil's Dispute, by Devil's Bag), one of the top older females stabled in New Orleans this winter, is back on a steady work pattern after missing a little time, and is on course to race Feb. 21 in the Mardi Gras Stakes, trainer Andrew McKeever said Wednesday.
Daisy Devine ran her career turf record to 2 for 2 with a dominant win in the Nov. 26 Pago Hop, but until she returned to the work tab on Jan. 16, the filly hadn’t posted a timed workout since that start.
“She came up with a little hiccup, but it was nothing to worry about,” McKeever said. “We just sat chilly for a couple weeks, and everything is perfect.”
While Daisy Devine will remain on turf in the Mardi Gras, she won the Fair Grounds Oaks on dirt last spring and is the rare horse capable of carrying her best form between surfaces. Purchased for $5,500 by owner James Miller, Daisy Devine has earned $533,349.

KAFWAIN FILLY WINS $250,000 REMINGTON PARK OAKS
TOURMALINE, the three-year-old daughter of KAFWAIN, turned in a game performance to win the $250,000 Remington Park Oaks going a mile and one-sixteenth over the main track at Remington Park.
TOURMALINE, broke her maiden at first-asking, winning her career debut at Remington Park in September 2010. She had not competed in Oklahoma City since, instead racing at seven other venues around North America, including a sojourn into Canada.
Owned by the Shawnee, Okla. partnership of Mike Walker and Wayne Ukens, TOURMALINE is trained by Bernell Rhone and was ridden by Dean Butler. The 3-year-old filly showed enough promise early on to warrant the opportunity at stakes races around the continent according to Rhone.
“She proved that she had to try the big girls,” Rhone said. “She has ability and today she showed why she has been in so many stakes races. She ran extremely well and it was a great ride.”
Rhone gave credit to Butler, who happens to be his son-in-law, for getting TOURMALINE home. However, Butler gave all the credit to the winning filly. “She ran a heckuva race. I was able to put us in a good spot and when the pace-setters got tired and started to get out in the stretch, she kept on digging to get by and win.”
TOURMALINE sat just off the pace in third for most of the trip. May Day Rose set the early pace while pressured by 7-5 wagering favorite Savvy Supreme. The quarter-mile splits were: :23.21 for the opening quarter; :46.36 for a half-mile and 1:10.02 for six furlongs. Challenging through the stretch, she clearly had the best finish in the field. She caught the pacesetters with a furlong to run, gettinng by them on the outside to win by half-length. Savvy Supreme was second, a neck better than May Day Rose.
The Remington Park Oaks was the fifth win from 10 starts for TOURMALINE. Produced by the Kris S. mare Career Time, she was bred in Florida by Peachtree Stable. Tourmaline earned $150,000 for the effort to roll her lifetime money up to $258,664.
