AUBURN, Wash. – WESTSIDECLYDE won his second stakes race of the season in the 12th running of the Budweiser-Emerald Handicap Sunday at Emerald Downs.
The 5-year-old son of WESTSIDECLYDE, conditioned by Craig Roberts and ridden by Ricky Frazier out of the seven-hole, took the $60,000 one-mile handicap by nearly two lengths.
WESTSIDECLYDE broke and ran to the lead by the clubhouse turn and began battling 9-year-old Poker Brad, with Macario Rodriguez in the irons, for the lead.
Poker Brad took the lead by the quarter-mile pole and held it to the half-mile pole, setting tepid fractions of 23 seconds in the quarter mile and 45 3/5 in the half.
“We just didn't want to go too fast,” Frazier said. “We wanted an easy first half and we didn't want to move too soon.”
WESTSIDECLYDE grabbed the lead as the two passed the half-mile mark. Poker Brad, the 2003 Top Older Horse, who was making his first start since July of 2005, continued to pressure Westsideclyde into the far turn.
“I was really looking forward to this race,” Roberts said. “I knew it would be a tough race.”
In the lane, Courting Seattle, ridden by Sandi Gann, and Poker Brad challenged Westsideclyde, but the gelding battled back and held on to win by nearly two lengths in a time of 1:34 1/5.

Courtesty of Daily Racing Form
By MARCUS HERSH
NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - DELIGHTFUL KISS, the son of KISSIN KRIS, got completely overlooked in the betting, but he was impossible to miss three-eighths of a mile from the finish of the Ohio Derby, a gray streak moving twice as fast as any other horse out on the track.
The big middle move proved plenty good, and DELIGHTFUL KISS, winning his first stakes race, went on to a 3o1/2-length victory over Moyer's Pond in the Grade 2, $300,000 derby. Late-running Reporting for Duty finished third, with odds-on favorite Cowtown Cat a non-threatening fourth.
DELIGHTFUL KISS, owned by 93-year-old Joseph Dreyfus's Hobeau Farms, is the only horse trained by Pete Anderson, a former jockey who won the 1964 Ohio Derby aboard National. Anderson, who rode Forego in the Kentucky Derby, is a good friend of Allen Jerkens, Hobeau's main trainer, and farm manager Craig Wheeler said it was Jerkens who asked Hobeau to give Anderson a 2-year-old to train.
DELIGHTFUL KISS has raced six times on turf, but his real ability lies on the main track. He beat Sightseeing and Chelokee in an entry-level allowance race in February at Gulfstream Park, then was a solid third behind Street Sense in the Tampa Bay Derby. Anderson and Hobeau would have run DELIGHTFUL KISS in the Kentucky Derby had the horse had enough graded stakes earnings, but DELIGHTFUL KISS missed out, and ran ninth in a turf stakes instead.
All of which helped make his win price of $51.80 Saturday, in the biggest race of Thistledown's season, somewhat shocking. Cowtown Cat had finished 20th in the Kentucky Derby, but took win money early and often, going off a surprisingly heavy favorite. Cowtown Cat settled in a decent spot on the backstretch, but jockey John Velazquez said "he wasn't there for me at the half-mile pole."
Forty Grams and Starbase set a solid pace, going the opening quarter-mile in 23.10 seconds and the half in 47.24, fractions that pleased Anderson, who cut a striking figure Saturday, his 4-feet-and-change frame adorned with an old-fashioned suit, wide tie, and a hat straight out of the 1940s.
"I was conscious of the 23 and 47," he said.
Anderson put his faith in the little-known Florida-based rider Jeffrey Sanchez, who coming into Saturday had ridden 13 winners all year. On a lesser horse, Sanchez's move might have been premature, but the stretch at Thistledown is short, and Delightful Kiss easily held clear second-place Moyer's Pond. His time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:49.36. Anderson mentioned the Iowa Derby as a possible upcoming race.

The 5-year-old son of OLD TOPPER battled race favorites Starbird Road and Flamethrowintexan for the second leg of the Longacres Miles series. The gelding won the six and one-half furlong stakes in 1 minute, 13 2/5 seconds, two-fifths seconds off the world-record time of 1:13 set by Sabertooth at Emerald Downs May 22, 2005.
The chestnut gelding, conditioned by Craig Roberts, was ridden out of the ninth post-position with Ricky Frazier in the irons.
WESTSIDECLYDE broke sharply and ran close to the leader, The Great Face ridden by Juan Gutierrez, as he set speedy fractions of 21 2/5 seconds in the quarter mile and :43 2/5 at the half mile mark.
“When I drew the nine hole I was real confident,” Frazier said. “He put me where I needed to be and he let me dictate the race. We were going world-record time and we weren't waiting on them.”
Frazier kept his charge within a length of The Great Face going into the far turn and opened a lead at the head of stretch, winning by nearly three lengths at the wire.
“I thought it was going to be a jockey's race,” Roberts said. “Ricky knew about some of the other horses out there.”
Frazier has ridden Flamethrowintexan in every race except one since 2004, including the victory in last year's Longacres Mile.
WESTSIDECLYDE paid $14.20, $7 and $4.80. The Great Face finished second and paid $9 and $6.40. Norm's Nephew returned $4.20 for third.

Courtesy of Emerald Downs News and Notes
CALL ON CARSON ran the race of his life winning the Auburn Stakes at Emerald Downs Sunday in record time.
The 3-year-old son of Lord Carson set a new Auburn Stakes record of 1 minute, 8 seconds in the 12th running of the $45,000 six-furlong race.
Jockey Kevin Radke won his second consecutive stakes of the weekend after riding Shampoo to the winner's circle in the U.S. Bank Stakes Saturday.
CALL ON CARSON, trained by Dan Markle, ran out of the sixth post-position in the six-horse field.
The bay gelding broke sharply out of the gate and went to the lead setting rapid fractions of 21 3/5 seconds in the quarter mile and 44 1/5 in the half.
At the three-eights pole the betting favorite, Immigration, ridden by Jennifer Whitaker, moved out from the rail and put pressure on CALL ON CARSON going into the turn.
“I was telling Dan (Markle) that we'd be out front,” Radke said. “Immigration tested me every step of the way.”
Coming out of the turn, Immigration hooked the gelding in the stretch, but CALL ON CARSON dug in and held off the charge, finishing more than two lengths ahead.
“It looked like Immigration was going to blow right on by him in the turn,” Markle said. “But I think we had a fitness edge.”
CALL ON CARSON raised his records to 2-0-0 from five starts. For the win the gelding earned $24,750, increasing his lifetime earnings to $36,280.

A RISING TURF STAR

Attention at this time of year is understandably focused on Kentucky Derby hopefuls. When the Grade I Florida Derby is run this Saturday at Gulfstream Park, it will be only five weeks until the 2007 Run for the Roses.
But there is a 3-year-old in California who keeps winning as if he could be a special colt. The thing is, because his victories have come in turf races, nobody is paying much attention to him -- yet.
His name is WHATSTHESCRIPT. Because he's not on the Kentucky Derby trail, he's not nearly as well known as fellow 3-year-olds Street Sense, Nobiz Like Shobiz, Circular Quay, Great Hunter and Scat Daddy. But based on what we've seen from Whatsthescript so far in the U.S., it looks like he is a rising star on the turf.
WHATSTHESCRIPT began his racing career in his native Ireland last May 31. Competing in a six-furlong contest on the turf at Leopardstown, he finished third at 10-1.
On July 10, WHATSTHESCRIPT was victorious by a head in a seven-furlong race at Roscommon. He defeated 12 opponents.
But it's WHATSTHESCRIPT's finale in Ireland that was a tip-off to his future success in this country. In the seven-furlong Tyro Stakes at Leopardstown on July 29, he finished third, 2 3/4 lengths behind the winner, Teofilo.
A son of the exciting stallion Galileo, Teofilo won all five of his races last year en route to being named Europe's champion 2-year-old colt in the 2006 Cartier Racing Awards. He currently is the favorite for two prestigious races in England, the Group I Two Thousand Guineas at Newmarket and Group I Epsom Derby.
Teofilo earned his 2-year-old title by twice narrowly defeating Coolmore's best juvenile, Holy Roman Emperor. Many were looking forward to the two colts running against each other again this year. But that's not going to happen because Holy Roman Emperor has been retired to stud to take the place of George Washington, Europe's champion 3-year-old colt of 2006 who now is back in training at Ballydoyle in Ireland after fertility problems. A possible target for “Georgeous George” is the Group I Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19, according to trainer Aidan O'Brien.
When WHATSTHESCRIPT made his U.S. debut in the Pinjara Stakes for Tommy Town Thoroughbreds on the turf at Oak Tree last Oct. 26, I thought the colt looked formidable based on his good performance against Teofilo on July 29. After that July 29 race, Teofilo had already risen to the top among Europe's 2-year-olds thanks to his victories in a Group II race at the Curragh on Aug. 26, the Group I National Stakes at the Curragh on Sept. 17 and the Group I Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Oct. 14.
Another tip-off with regard to WHATSTHESCRIPT going in the Pinjara was the big Timeform rating of 96 for his July 29 race.
If Teofilo had been in the Pinjara, he probably would have been about 1-5 in the wagering. To my surprise, Whatsthescript went off at almost 5-1.
Blocked in the upper stretch, WHATSTHESCRIPT surged late once clear to win by a half-length. He paid $11.80. I had singled him in the pick six. However, despite such a nice victorious single, I wasn't able to hit the pick six that day. But I also did bet WHATSTHESCRIPT to win, which resulted in a profitable afternoon thanks to that $11.80 mutuel.
WHATSTHESCRIPT next started in a division of the Grade III Generous Stakes. Again, he prevailed by a half-length. But the margin is misleading. He won under very confident handling. Jockey Isaias Enriquez had the colt under wraps through the final yards.
It was then decided to run WHATSTHESCRIPT on Hollywood Park's Cushion Track in the Grade I Hollywood Futurity on Dec. 16. After all, earlier in 2006, Barbaro had made a successful transition from the turf to the dirt, culminating with a win in the Kentucky Derby. So why not try WHATSTHESCRIPT on the Cushion Track?
WHATSTHESCRIPT finished 10th in the Hollywood Futurity, but it's not as if he embarrassed himself. He ended up just 4 1/2 lengths behind the winner, Stormello.
After the Hollywood Futurity, WHATSTHESCRIPT switched barns, with Doug O'Neill taking over the Tommy Town-owned horses from Manny Marques.
WHATSTHESCRIPT's first start for O'Neill came in the Pasadena Stakes at one mile on Santa Anita's turf course on March 16. The colt won by 1 3/4 lengths in a snazzy 1:33.88.
That makes WHATSTHESCRIPT three for three in U.S. grass races. While O'Neill has such Kentucky Derby candidates as Great Hunter, Cobalt Blue, Notional and Liquidity, the trainer also may have the colt to beat in a Grade III grass race the day before the Derby. The word is we might see WHATSTHESCRIPT in the Crown Royal American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs on May 4.
