SWISS WILD CAT WINS CTBA STAKES!
Making a strong inside move through the stretch, MINISTERS WILD CAT two-year-old filly SWISS WILD CAT earned the first stakes victory of her career in the $100,000 California Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Stakes going five and one-half furlongs over the Polytrack at Del Mar.
Fifth early, SWISS WILD CAT was able to move from the outside to the rail around the far turn and she had clear sailing to launch her bid. She caught the leaders with a sixteenth of a mile to run and she kept on going to record the half-length victory.
SWISS WILD CAT is a homebred racing for Heinz Steinmann and she is out of the Swiss Yodeler mare, I Can Yodele. She is trained by Mike Harrington.
WHATSTHESCRIPT GETS BACK ON TRACK

By Steve Andersen
The career direction of WHATSTHESCRIPT, the five-time stakes winner and 2010 stallion, is uncertain, but that is not a worry for owner Tom Stull.
After standing his first season at stud at Stull's Tommy Town Thoroughbreds earlier this year, WHATSTHESCRIPT was put back in training in the spring. In his comeback in the Battlefield Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 10, WHATSTHESCRIPT closed from seventh in a field of eight to finish third, beaten 1 1/2 lengths by Violon Sacre.
The race left Stull encouraged that the 6-year-old WHATSTHESCRIPT could be effective on the track in the second half this year. His future as a stallion will be determined later, depending on how his career proceeds.
"I don't know what I'll do," Stull said. "I hope I get that far and he does that well. I hope to have a tough decision."
WHATSTHESCRIPT has won 6 of 20 starts and $917,964. His most recent stakes win was the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile Handicap on turf in August 2008, but he kept good company in a five-race campaign last year. In 2009, WHATSTHESCRIPT was third in the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes and Oak Tree Mile and ended the year with an eighth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita.
Earlier in his career, the Irish-bred WHATSTHESCRIPT, by Royal Applause, won three stakes on turf at 2 and 3, while trained by Manny Marques and Doug O'Neill. John Sadler trained WHATSTHESCRIPT in 2008 and 2009.
At stud, WHATSTHESCRIPT was bred to 26 mares at an advertised fee of $4,000. The stallion was not as well supported as Stull would have preferred.
Stull said that WHATSTHESCRIPT emerged from the 2009 season with a soft-tissue injury, which led him to send the horse to the East Coast and away from California's synthetic tracks.
"Any horse I get with a soft-tissue injury, I send them back to the dirt tracks," he said. "I don't like [synthetic tracks] personally. There are too many soft-tissue injuries."
Stull said he has sent an increasing number of claimers to Eastern tracks because the cost of keeping a cheaper horse in training in California has become too prohibitive.
"It's very difficult, and it's tough on us breeders," he said. "A lot of people are leaving the game because the expenses are too high and there is not enough reward. The purse money here, unless you're running a big horse, is nothing. You pay $90 to keep horses in training, and if you're lucky you break even.
"I would run here if the purses were equal to back East, even though the training bills are higher."
Stull said that he and trainer Gary Contessa will plan a graded stakes race for WHATSTHESCRIPT's next start. Two possibilities over 1 1/16 miles on turf on Aug. 1 are the $200,000 Oceanport Stakes at Monmouth Park and the $150,000 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga.
"We were really excited with his [comeback] race," Stull said. "We didn't know what to expect. He loves to work and was a gentleman. We didn't know what he would do on the track. Gary was really happy."
* Stull's U R All That I Am, winner of two stakes at Hollywood Park earlier this year, is a candidate for the $75,000 Osunitas Handicap for fillies and mares at Del Mar on Saturday. The California-bred 4-year-old filly has won 8 of 16 starts and $325,628. She was third in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Stakes at Hollywood Park in her last start on July 3.
The Osunitas is run over 1 1/16 miles on turf and is restricted to horses that have not won a first-place purse worth $50,000 to the winner at a mile or farther this year.

Trained by Gary Contessa, Whatsthescript was beaten just 1 1/2 lengths in the mile turf stakes.

TOMMY TOWN-BRED YOU LIFT ME UP WINS WORK THE CROWD STAKES!
This time, there was no catching YOU LIFT ME UP in the Work The Crowd Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.
YOU LIFT ME UP, who had to settle for second in the 2009 edition of the Work The Crowd after being run down in the stretch by Lady Railrider, ran strong to the wire Saturday to capture the 1 1/16-mile race for California-bred fillies and mares by two lengths. Rule the Storm took second by a length over Croxie.
Jockey Russell Baze rode YOU LIFT ME UP and was surprised that his mount won the $50,000 race in front-running fashion.
“I really didn’t want to be on the lead but I would have had to strangle her to keep her off it,” said Baze. “That’s all right. I didn’t mind being on an easy lead. You knew when they let her get away with those fractions that she’d be very tough to beat.”
YOU LIFT ME UP cruised on the lead while getting away with an opening half-mile in 49.57 seconds and three-quarters of a mile in 1:13.67. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, YOU LIFT ME UP won the Work The Crowd in 1:44.64.
Installed an even-money favorite by the fans, YOU LIFT ME UP paid $4.00 after collecting her fourth career stakes victory and her eighth win in 31 starts. Saturday’s $30,000 payday boosted YOU LIFT ME UP’s earnings to $431,299.

KAFWAIN FILLY SETS STAKES RECORD IN GIII FLORIDA OAKS!
The Grade III $200,000 Florida Oaks for three-year-old fillies was captured by Alan Brodky's DON'T FORGET GIL, who ran the 1 1/16 main track event in the stakes record-setting time of 1:43.65, besting the old track record of 1:44.38. The Mark Hennig trainee was ridden to victory by Rajiv Maragh, with Ameribelle finishing second and Rock Candy in third.
Alan Brodsky, owner of DON'T FORGET GIL, said of his filly's win, I was (pretty confident coming into the Florida Oaks.) The last time I came to a race from a long distance and won was on September 7, 1991, so the trainer wasn't too interested in having me here! This horse is something special. She's as good a horse as I've ever had, and I'm very happy with her. It's been a really enjoyable day. While Brodsky says he'd like to see how his filly emerges from the race before committing to any future starts, he has big plans for Don't Forget Gil. We're going to look around and do what's best for her. Certainly the Kentucky Oaks is a possibility. You know, from the Florida Oaks to the Kentucky Oaks - we'll go state by state.
Winning jockey Rajiv Maragh said of DON'T FORGET GIL's victory, I am two-for-two in stakes on this filly now and I was very glad for the chance to ride her again. I watched her last race and knew she would be solid again today. She had a problem in the gate that day, got shuffled back and was still closing fastest at the end. She's a New York Bred but I think there will be other opportunities open to her as well. Was that really a stakes record? She was going so easily at the end; for sure she had lots left.
